Portrait of Mr. and Mrs. Edgar
Cayce overlooks the ARE
reception area. Mr. Cayce was a
world-famous psychic.
“We push the blood toward the
heart,” says George, a muscular
young man at the Massage and Day
Spa at the old Cayce Hospital
Building on a hill overlooking
the A.R.E. center. “Now we make
little curly-cue movements along
the spinal cord to stimulate the
nerves.” Some of the stated
goals of the Cayce/Reilly
Massage are to improve blood
circulation and joint mobility.
Soft music plays in the
background while George works.
When asked more about A.R.E., he
says, “The movement changed my
life. It made me much more
responsive and caring toward
other people.”
The “movement” was founded by
Edgar Cayce, known as the
“Sleeping Prophet.” Many people
hold strongly different
viewpoints about his lifework,
but few question that he is a
well-documented clairvoyant.
Although not a doctor, he had
one of the more unusual “medical
practices” and conducted some
controversial research into the
bible, the original site of the
lost city of Atlantis and other
subjects. Edgar Cayce was a
devout Christian who read the
Bible every day of his life. He
could enter a sleeplike trance
while his wife and son brought
in letters from around the world
from people detailing personal
problems ranging from illness to
family or work stress. Without
the letters being opened, Edgar
Cayce began to dictate his
responses. Some 14,000 of his
documented psychic readings are
stored in the center’s library,
open to the public. This
library contains more than
63,000 volumes on spirituality,
parapsychology, world religion,
philosophy and holistic health.
It is considered one of the
largest metaphysical libraries
in the world.
Hollywood actress Shirley
McClain became one of his
disciples and wrote several New
Age books about her
experiences. Some people report
she still comes to A.R.E.,
wearing sunglasses and a high
scarf to avoid being
recognized. A staff member
explained, “We are not a
religion. Everyone has their own
beliefs. We just try to help
people.”
On a visit to the A.R.E. you can
take a guided tour of the
building including the library,
spend time in the meditation
view with a great view of the
Atlantic ocean, attend lectures,
relax by an outside medication
pool or on summer weekends
attend an ESP Demonstration.
