HISTORIC JAMESTOWNE

Photographs (c) Michele and Tom Grimm

The original Fort at Jamestown where the .Settlers created the first permanent English settlement in America, rediscovered by the Association of Preservation of Virginia Antiquities - teaspoon by teaspoon.

Statue of Captain John Smith, the 5'2" dynamo, braggart and adventurer who helped the first settlers survive starvation and Indian raids.

A tiny fraction of the thousands of artifacts uncovered, including pieces of armor, pottery shards, animal bones and even wine jugs with the initials "J.S." (Captain John Smith, perhaps?)

The settlers included gentlemen who must have been concerned with personal grooming. This "ear pick" (ouch!) was one of the tiny artifacts uncovered.

Statue of Pocahontas, the Indian maiden who (according to Captain Smith) rescued from an execution by the Indians. Hollywood has the 43-year-old Captain Smith wildly in love with her. Hardly likely. She was twelve at the time they met!
