The best getaway is one that really takes you away to another world – and the best of that world is in Virginia: Charming small towns, cities and neighborhoods, great shops and restaurants, country roads winding through woods and meadows, outdoor recreation.
The Historic Galax Walking Tour – Galax Downtown Galax, home to the Rex Theater, Barr’s Fiddle Shop and a bevy of shops and restaurants, uses its new Historic Galax Walking Tour to tell its story. This Commercial Historic District, with 64 locations on the tour, is listed on the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places. Printed guides available through the Galax Tourism Department.
Dismal Swamp Canal Trail - Chesapeake Get face-to-face with nature as you rarely see it. The 8.5-mile trail traverses some of the most ecologically significant habitats in the United States. The Great Dismal Swamp Refuge, parts of which were surveyed by George Washington’s company, is home to myriad specifies of wildlife. The Swamp is also nationally recognized as a stop on the Underground Railroad. The trail is linear and flat, perfect for families of all ages for walking, biking or horseback riding. A boat ramp is nearby for boating, canoeing or kayaking. Opened May 2006.
Virginia Birding and Wildlife Trail – Statewide Come out and discover Virginia’s wild side. The first state in the country with a statewide birding and wildlife trail system, Virginia has gotten even better with the installation of new road and site signs across the commonwealth to assist visitors in traveling the 65 loops of the Trail. In addition, a brand new trail guide is now available.
The Yellow Barn at Shenandoah Caverns – Shenandoah Caverns Shenandoah Caverns, already home to one of the East Coast’s most popular underground attractions as well as “American Celebration on Parade,” will open The Yellow Barn on Memorial Day 2007. The 15,000 square foot barn will including agricultural and nature exhibits, a petting zoo, demonstration beehive, food service, entertainment, Shenandoah Valley arts & crafts and retail specialties in a country store atmosphere – a perfect complement to this attraction.
Suffolk Center for the Performing Arts The 1922 Suffolk High School building has been adapted into a spectacular 522-seat theater. Adjacent ballroom and banquet hall accommodates 600 for special events. The 1920s-era classroom museum adds a touch of nostalgia. Opened September 2006.
Virginia Sports Complex – Ruther Glen Eight professional-grade baseball fields, eight indoor batting cages, four volleyball courts, two basketball courts, classrooms, a weight room and an abundance of technical aids are a part of this new sports destination in Caroline County. Onsite instruction is available for those wishing to improve their game. A perfect site for tournaments with nearby lodging and restaurants. Opened summer 2006.
State Fair of Virginia – Doswell After more than 150 years in operation the State Fair of Virginia moves to a new location near Kings Dominion just off I-95. This new central location will enable thousands to easily drive to and experience one of Virginia’s greatest annual traditions featuring top-name entertainment, rides, midway and agricultural competitions.
